BIDDEFORD – June Frances Meserve, aged 98, passed away on October 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love and service. Born on February 28, 1928, in Chicopee, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the Reverend William and Mrs. Ada Gunter.
Education and Early Career
June graduated from Watertown High School and briefly attended the University of New Hampshire before transferring to Bryant and Stratton Business School. Her career began as a secretary in the athletic department at Northeastern University, where she dedicated several years and developed a lifelong loyalty to the university’s sports teams.
A Life Built on Family and Faith
In the summer of 1945, June met Robert Meserve in Ocean Park, Maine. The couple married in 1951, embarking on a 71-year journey marked by deep devotion to their family, church, and community.
June’s commitment to her faith was evident through her long-standing involvement with the Old South Methodist Church in Reading, where her father served as minister starting in 1946. Over the decades, she took on numerous roles, including president of the United Methodist Women and leader of the Dorcas Circle. June’s musical talents shone as she frequently played the piano for church services and at the Daniels Nursing Home, often humorously declaring her intention to entertain the elderly long into her own later years.

In her professional life, June worked as a teacher aide for 20 years, first at Prospect Street School and then at Barrows, where she became a cherished resource for both students and teachers. Beyond her professional commitments, June was known for her culinary skills, especially her renowned Sunday dinners. She enjoyed berry picking and was skilled at making pies, cakes, and jams, ensuring her family was always treated to delicious meals.
During the summer months, she shared her artistic talents by teaching craft classes in Ocean Park. June was an accomplished artist in various crafts, including wood painting, calligraphy, and knitting. Her creativity extended to sewing, where she used an antique sewing machine to make everything from dresses to Halloween costumes. She also cherished gardening, reading, and visiting the seashore, particularly Ocean Park, all while placing utmost importance on time spent with her family and friends.
